Eitan Marshall-Pinko (he/his) is a Ph.D. student at the University of Virginia. He studies African American history and American legal history with a particular focus on law and order in the South during Reconstruction. To explore this topic, Eitan examines the rise and fall of the Freedmen's Bureau Courts, operational throughout the South during the early years of Reconstruction. These courts heard many civil and criminal cases, marking a powerful, yet understudied, experiment in legal change. In the early stages of his research, Eitan has focused on Richmond and its Freedmen's Bureau Court. His dissertation will build on this foundation, while also featuring a case-database of these Freedmen's Bureau Court decisions in a selection of locales across the South. Prior to his time at the University of Virginia, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History with honors, cum laude, from Boston University.
